When I first read Kindness is My Superpower by Alicia Ortego to my first graders, I could feel the energy shift in the room. You know that beautiful, quiet kind of listening? The kind where even the wiggliest kiddos are completely still, soaking in every word? Yep. That happened.
And of course, after reading, they had so much to say. About kindness. About apologies. About making things right. That’s when I knew this book wasn’t just going to be a one-time read aloud – it was going to be an anchor for our social-emotional learning.
So I created a Kindness is My Superpower activity pack to help you dive deeper into the message of the story, while hitting all those essential literacy standards. This resource is packed with engaging, rigorous activities designed to support discussion, build vocabulary, and give your students a chance to show what kindness means to them.

Summary of Kindness is My Superpower
This story follows Lucas, a young boy who makes a mistake and learns about kindness, empathy, and making things right. Through simple, rhyming text and relatable examples, students can easily connect to Lucas’ journey and reflect on how their own actions impact others.
It’s a perfect read aloud to launch kindness lessons, build classroom community, or tie into your character education unit.
Kindness is My Superpower Activities to explore Character Traits and Feelings
Character analysis
After reading, we dig into Lucas’ character: what kind of person he was at the beginning, what changed, and what traits he showed along the way. Students complete a character map to show his feelings, motivations, and actions.
How to use it: Pair this with a group discussion. Use sentence stems like “Lucas showed kindness when he…” or “Lucas felt ____ because…” to support oral language before writing.
Cause and Effect + Sequencing
We also work on key comprehension skills like cause and effect and sequencing. One of my favorite activities is matching actions to their consequences – like how Lucas’ apology affected the people around him.
How to use it: These can be done in small groups or as an early finisher task with cut-and-paste pages.

Kindness is My Superpower Activities to Practice Writing Skills – Writing Craft: Kindness Is a Treasure
Students choose from four prompts to write about how they can show kindness at school, at home, or in the community. Then they create a treasure craft to display their writing.
How to use it: This is a fantastic follow-up for your writing block. Add it to a bulletin board or use it as a hallway display during Kindness Week!
Crown Craft: Kindness is My Superpower!
Let students reflect on their own “superpowers” with a fun and meaningful crown craft that celebrates their ability to be kind. They draw or write examples of their kind actions around the crown.
How to use it: Use this on a Friday as a celebration activity. Students can wear their crowns and share their kindness plans with the class.

Final Thoughts
This book always sparks thoughtful discussions and meaningful moments in the classroom. With the right activities, your students will do so much more than just listen — they’ll connect, reflect, and grow.
Plus, tying in standards-based literacy skills makes this a truly powerful read aloud experience. And let’s be honest – anything that blends comprehension, crafts, SEL, and writing is a win in my book.
