There’s something about those final weeks of school that feels a little surreal. The countdown is real, the supplies are running low, and the energy is high. But instead of trying to fight it, I say lean in – and make those last days meaningful, memorable, and full of connection with the help of these fun end of the year read alouds.
This is the time of year when I pull out some of my favorite end of the year read alouds that help us reflect on how far we’ve come, celebrate our classroom family, and even imagine the future. And of course, I pair each book with engaging, low-prep activities that still pack an academic punch. Below are five go-to titles I use every year, along with the companion activities I created to make each read aloud shine.

The Smart Cookie Read Aloud Activities
I adore The Smart Cookie by Jory John all year long, but it hits especially well at the end of year when you want students to reflect on how much they’ve grown. It’s playful, encouraging, and helps even your quietest learners realize how much smarts they’ve shown in different ways. This story celebrates more than just grades or test scores. It shows that being “smart” can look like being kind, creative, brave, or resilient — which is the perfect message to send kids off with.

Activities include a smart cookie craft with space for writing personal reflections, discussion questions that focus on self-esteem, growth, and perseverance, writing prompts – more than 40 unique activities!
If I Built a School Read Aloud + STEM Activity
If your students are buzzing with energy, give them an outlet for all that creativity with this fun end of the year read aloud activities to go along with If I Built a School by Chris Van Dusen. The story sparks wild ideas and silly inventions – and your students will be inspired to dream up something even better than the author’s vision. It’s a high-energy story that opens the door to student voice, problem-solving, and creativity. Plus, it leads right into a collaborative STEM-style project.

Activities include design-your-own-school writing pages and blueprints, class discussion around innovation and imagination, and a fun build-and-share STEM component (perfect for partners or small groups).
Kindness is My Superpower Read Aloud Activities
Kindness is My Superpower is a simple but powerful story that reminds students how kindness can truly change a day. It’s a great anchor for talking about how we want to leave the year and how we want to show up in the next one. It’s accessible for all learners, and it opens up deep conversations without ever being too heavy. Plus, it brings your class back to community-building and respectful behavior.

Activities include a kindness crown craft with positive self-talk and affirmations, a variety of character and plot analysis tasks adapted for elementary students, writing prompts and 2 crafts.
Our Class is a Family Read Aloud Companion
Our Class is a Family is always the book I save for the last week of school. It’s sweet, heartfelt, and reminds students that this room we’ve built together really is a special place. It allows us to celebrate all the little things that made our classroom a community — the inside jokes, the teamwork, the kindness, and even the tough moments that made us stronger.

Activities include a family portrait craft and writing template, an end-of-year memory page, and a class book option: Our Favorite Classroom Moments.
Say Something – End of the Year Read Alouds + Class Project
Peter H. Reynolds always brings the inspiration, and Say Something is no exception. I love using this one to encourage reflection, courage, and self-expression. What do your students want to say before they leave this year behind? It gives students a voice – literally. It’s a powerful message about speaking up for yourself and others, which ties in perfectly with those end-of-year values of kindness, inclusion, and looking ahead.

Activities include “My message to the world” writing prompts, a class mural or bulletin board project (perfect for showcasing during open house or sending home), and an art + writing combo project that makes for a beautiful keepsake.
